A Folktale from Kalimantan : The Curse of King Mintin

Dragon and Crocodile
retold by Miss Siska

Once, there lived a King and Queen in a palace in Kalimantan. He's a wise king. They were both sincerely loved and honored by their people. Their people lived in prosperity and happiness. The King and Queen had twin sons, Naga and Buaya. Naga means 'dragon' while buaya means 'crocodile'.

One day, the Queen  suffered from a strange illness until she took her last breath. The kingdom and its people were in the deepest grief. The King was too in grief that he lost his interest in ruling the kingdom. Thus, he decided to sail away to ease the pain.

"My Majesty, who is going to rule this kingdom as you are away?" asked his advisor.

"I put my whole trust in my twin sons,  Naga and Buaya," he replied.
"..and please give them your hand if it's getting tough." he added.

The King's advisor nodded.

The next day, the King sat and talked to his sons, "My dearest sons, I'm going to sail away for a while. Your mother has gone away. I need time and space for my own. Please rule this kingdom wisely."

Though Naga and Buaya were identically twins, but they both had different personalities. Buaya who's generously kind, replied, "Sail safely, my father. All I want is to be home again."

In contrary, Naga treated this command as a burden. But deep inside his head said something else, "Well.. I can spend my father's wealth and the kingdom's authority for having fun."

Show and Tell : Jonathan's Fave Storybook

Meet Jonathan, a 3rd grader! He's Indonesian. He also performed his show and tell in his English class at school. Actually he's got a very good sense of humour. 😄
But when it comes to speak English in front of the class, he's kind of nervous I think. Somehow, he did his performance very well. Great job, Nathan!

Show and Tell : Evelyn's Favourite Storybook

A Folktale from Bangka Belitung, Sumatera : A Golden Bridge for Princess

Bujang Katak
retold by Miss Siska

Once there lived a poor old lady. She diligently prayed the Lord to be given a child. Accidentally, in her prayer she said “Even if the Lord gives me a child with a frog look, I will still love him.” Apparently, the Lord was giving what she wished for, a baby boy with frog face and body.

His mother was very happy to finally have a child. She gave him a name ‘Bujang Katak'. Bujang means son while Katak means frog. He looked like frog that his skin was slick and greenish while his neck was too short.

As days went by, Bujang Katak grew into a strong young man. Mom was very proud of having such son .Although he walked like a frog , but he never lost his confidence. He was known as a friendly and hard-working son that he also had many friends.

One day, he sat and daydreamt morosely. He began to worry about his physical appearance.

“What are you thinking, my dearest son ? You have been sitting and daydreaming all day..” his mother asked worriedly.

He sighed and answered, “I’m growing up , mom. Isn’t it time for marriage?”
His mother was once happy but suddenly she wasn’t as she was thinking who would marry her frog-look son.

“I wish I could marry a princess. Will you engage me with a princess?” said Bujang Katak.
“ Oh dear son! How can a princess accept you?” her mother replied in moroseness.
“But I promise I’ll try my best for you, dear son.”

The next day, she went to the palace. When she got there, she immediately met the king.
“My apologies, the honorable king. I do apologise for my impudence. I am here to marry my son Bujang Katak with your daughter princess.”
“How can a princess love your froggy son?” the king replied.

Yet, this wise king invited his seven daughters to consider Bujang Katak’s proposal. The first until sixth daughter refused. But the seventh daughter answered, “It is okay , father. I don’t see his physical appearance, I see his pure heart. He’s a good and responsible man.”

The next day , Bujang Katak went to the palace to meet the king. “You can marry my daughter in ONE CONDITION,” said the king.
“....you have got to build a golden bridge to connect the palace with your village.” Bujang Katak agreed.

He came home telling his mother about it. ”My son oh dear, we are poor. How can we get some gold to build the bridge?” asked his mother.
“But I still believe in God’s miracle,” he replied. That night he continued to pray and pray for what he wished for comes true. He was confident the Lord would help him.

The morning came, he woke up and went for a bath. As he looked in himself in the mirror, he was surprised for miracle happened. His thick slippery flaky skin was gone. He was flabbergasted. And all he saw was a handsome young man in the mirror.
“Mother, hurry up! Come see me!”

As he returned to the well, his stacks of peeled thick skin turned into gold. He praised the Lord. With his thick froggy skin he could build a golden bridge. He worked days and nights.

The day had come. Bujang Katak and his mother went to see the king. All the princesses and the king was wondering, “Who is this young man standing in front of me?”

“This young man is Bujang Katak, My Majesty. God has turned him into a handsome man,” said his mother. The seventh princess smiled happily.

“Hey, Bujang Katak! Although you have turned into handsome young man, you should still meet my own condition, A GOLDEN BRIDGE,” the king warned him.

“Of course, My Majesty. Let’s see and walk over my golden bridge!” he replied.

The Golden Bridge was so magnificent. Its golden colour shimmered and glimmered everywhere. King was glad to see Bujang Katak’s huge effort to marry his youngest daughter.  Apparently, what she thought was right. Her choice was absolutely right to accept him.

Then they returned to the palace for planning the most extravagant wedding party soon.
And finally Bujang Katak married the princess. They lived happily ever after.

MORAL VALUE :
“Chase your dream even though it takes moon to make it come true, stand up and your huge effort will pay off. Always believe in your faith and miracles.”

Narrative Text, A Short Story : A Giant Bread Castle

A Giant Bread Castle
by Miss Siska

Once upon a time there lived 6 brothers, Floury, Eggsy, Yeastie, Sweety-Salty the twins and Butter in a small cabin bowl in a Wonderpastry Land. They lived under Bakery Factory. Where all people have to work together to build a Bread Castle. Hmmm... it’s a Giant Bread Castle.

Floury, the eldest brother is selfish. Eggsy, the second brother is furious. Everytime he gets mad, he always cracks himself. Yeasty and Butter are both patient and diligent boys. Unlike the twins, they’re sometimes lazy. Urgh! Only Butter is a patient boy.

One day, they had a bitter quarrel over the Bread Castle they were building. It’s still half-built castle anyway. But five brothers began to be arrogant about themselves. Especially Floury, he thought the castle wouldn’t be completely built without him.

“Look at me! Without me, everthing is nothing!”

“Sure not. The castle will be just a crumb without me!”, Eggsy objected.
“But the castle won’t be that big without me!”, Yeastie added angrily.
“We’re tired. We don’t want to work anymore.”

As everybody turned selfish, there came a hundred Ant Troops began to break the castle.

“Nooooooooooooo!”, the six brothers shouted surprisingly.

The half-built castle now just ruined. So the brothers had to rebuild back to the square one. As five brothers felt regret of their arrogance, Butter came home.

“Well, The Bread Castle would be there if together we stand,” Butter advised wisely.

“OK! Now we have to rebuild the castle again. Let’s go!”, Floury, Eggsy, Yeastie and the twins added.

“Together we stand!”, Butter encouraged others passionately.

Once upon a time in West Kalimantan, there was a Kingdom of Amuntai .The kingdom of amuntai was ruled by two kings, the anointed ones. They’re King Patmaraja and his younger brother , King Sukmaraga. These two kings and rule justly, appreciate each other , as well as getting along. There never existed discord among them.

While crossing a river , King Patmaraga saw some floating river foam. Right on it, there was a beautiful little baby. He was really happy , and asking his wife, “Is this the answer of our prayers?” Then he excitedly commanded Datuk pujung to take the baby.

Datuk Pujung stepped into the river trying to reach out the baby. But every time he tried, the foam diverged as if the baby didn’t want him to hold. Everybody was shocked and wondered. Therefore, the baby didn’t cry but spoke. She said, “You can not take me unless there are 40 women to pick me up. And make me a beautiful quilt to keep my body warm, a quilt that is woven for a half day in time.”

King Patmaraga immediately ruled Datuk Pujung to go back to the palace , and collect 40 women. He held a competition of making a beautiful quilt for the baby that must be done in a half day. For those who could, would be appointed as the baby sitter of the palace. They began to compete, they used best thread.

Half day had passed, no one finished weaving a quilt. Datuk Pujung was desperate. But there was suddenly a woman came to him .She handed over a sheet of a quilt and folded . He opened the folded quilt and checked it. “This is neat. The color  is also beautiful”, he was amazed. He asked that lady’s name. Her name is Queen Kuripan . He declared this Queen Kuripan to be the baby sitter in the palace.

Datuk pujung , Queen Kuripan , and 40 women set out to the kingdom and gave it to the king. Slow down the king went into the river accompanied 40 women behind him .Carefully , the king pulled out the river foam. Queen Kuripan handed over the quilt to the king. Religion : Love

A very brief short(?) story of mine:
The other day, my 7 yo student surprised me with his statement as his classmate(girl) claimed, "My friend told me you were Christian and converted to Muslim in the last few years." Me : 😊

Yeph, the smile I put on is the answer of such question. Dear.. No matter what my religion was and is, we all live together in the place called earth. Peace is all we hope for. Grow more loves instead of hatred. Start with loving ourselves, so we won't let anybody else feels hurt. Though somebody else hurt us, we're hoped to forgive.

I've been always Muslim since I was born. But to me, all religions are good-taught. Only depends on the individuals. Selalu ingin hidup di era Rakai Pikatan dan Rakai Panangkaran, berbeda agama tapi rukun selalu hidup berdampingan.
Bahkan Candi besarnya dibangun dlm 1 area. Membangunnya pun saling bergotong-royong. Semoga tdk ada permusuhan hanya karena perbedaan agama dan ras. Hidup damai berdampingan.
Aaaamiiin YRA. 🙏
*Berdampingan ya... Hmm. Sepertinya harus cari 'pendamping' dulu nih. #ehhhh
Selamat malam Minggu. 😊
